We walk back to my car and I let him drive as the pain in my ribs has increased. My body throbs with every bump in the road. I watch Nate’s profile as he steers my car into the lot on campus. His eyes are focused on the road in front as he absentmindedly pushes his hand through his messy hair. I guess that’s my fault, the messy part anyway. I touch my own, already knowing how difficult it’s going to be to get the knots out. I don’t care though, not really. I actually had fun today, more than I’ve had in a long time. It’s just a shame it can’t happen again. Not with Tami around. The rumors are out of control, at the point of physical violence. I’m finding myself questioning why I’m still here more and more every day. If I just left, Tami would get over herself. She could get her claws back into Nate because I’m not stupid enough to not know that he is the biggest reason for her strong dislike towards me. The girl is deluded. All of this is because I slept with him one time. How much worse will it be if I was to date him? For that reason alone, I know I can’t. Sitting with him in that diner today I’d let myself wonder about it, wonder what it would be like. I’d be lying to myself if I said I didn’t want it. I’d never wanted it before, but with Nate things are different. He sees me, I know he does, and that speaks to me in a way that is indescribable. My body is tuned in to him, I know the second he’s nearby and my eyes will immediately lock onto his. Yet, I don’t think that’s enough. It’s not enough to pull him through the gutter of lies and rumors that I face every day.

He parks up and turns to me, smiling wide and ending my negative thoughts.

“So… question time,” he begins. I roll my eyes dramatically and he laughs. “I have 19 left and I do plan to use them all.” He gives me a pointed look and I laugh softly.

“So, are you going to let me take you out this weekend or will I have to hijack you in your car again to get another date?”

I smirk. “By saying another date you are implying that we have had one already, which we haven’t. I think I’d remember if we had.”

I climb from the car and he follows me out laughing.

“You’re not an easy woman to please, are you?”

“No, I’m definitely not.”
